Beach and resort towns get most of the attention, but city hotels are just as much on the rise, and four projects tracked in the THP hotel database show how varied the projects can be. They are located in India, the United States, Finland, and Japan, and they span nearly every stage of development. Each one takes a different route to the city market.
Songtei Kyoto Shangri La Signatures is the furthest along, already under construction in Japan. The five-star, 77-room property is a new building in Kyoto, and its name points to a Shangri-La collection that sits alongside the group’s main brand. Sofitel Ahmedabad Palladium Mall Road is at the opposite end of the timeline, still in the vision phase. At 250 rooms, it is the largest of the four, and it would be a five-star new build in Ahmedabad, in the Indian state of Gujarat.
The other two projects work with buildings and sites that already exist. Ruby Hotel Helsinki Kamppi is in the planning phase and would be a conversion, turning an existing property in Helsinki into an 84-room, four-star hotel. The Westin Sacramento Hotel & Marina is in pre-planning and is listed as an extension. At 77 rooms and four stars, it would add to an existing site in Sacramento, California.
The four projects do not follow one script. Room counts run from 77 to 250, and star ratings split between four and five. Two are new buildings, one is a conversion, and one is an extension, so the group covers several ways of adding a hotel to a city. Each is one entry among thousands the THP database tracks globally, spanning every stage from early planning through construction and opening.
