Onyx Hospitality is pushing ahead with the growth of its Shama extended stay brand, across more Asia Pacific markets

Southeast Asian management group Onyx Hospitality Group has revealed it will be rolling out its Shama serviced apartment brand, across the region.

The decision comes following strong positive feedback from guests who have experienced the brand’s first openings. These include Shama Hub Qiantang in Hangzhou, China, Shama Hub Metro South in Hong Kong, and Shama Suasana, which is found in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

A proven successful format

Both business and professional travellers have given their thumbs up to the format, which has responded to a growing demand for international arrivals who require long term accommodation when they arrive to work in city commercial districts. As a result, Shama was born – and is now set to expand further.

Currently, Shama has a portfolio of 2,500 units across 20 different properties, claiming the market leading position for international standard serviced apartments in Hong Kong, where it has seven locations. In addition, the brand is present at five Chinese properties and in two Malaysian sites. Further expansion will include adding more apartments in destinations including cities in Malaysia, Laos and Thailand.

Onyx operates two sub-brands, Shama and Shama Hub, and two of the newest properties in Qiantang Hangzhou, China and Hong Kong are branded Shama Hub. The China property is close to the picturesque Qiantang River, allowing residents the convenience of a short walk to shops, department stores, and Dongsha Lake. In Hong Kong the latest addition is a 26 storey block with 139 apartments offering a mix of seven different layouts and sizes.

The third new arrival is Shama Suasana Johor Bahru in Malaysia. A mix of 87 residences, ranging in size from studios to three bed suites, provides a home from home in the city, with easy access around the urban conurbation by jumping on the city’s Rapid Transit System at a nearby station.

An experienced hospitality operations business, Onyx has more than five decades in business across the Asia Pacific region. It has grown the Amari, Shama and OZO brands as it supports property owners with a management service that delivers guest satisfaction with strong business performance.

Joining a growing brand family

Onyx brought the Amari brand to the market in 1992 and is the group’s leading brand, and today has hotels in eight destinations within Thailand, plus three in Malaysia, two in Laos and one each in new markets of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Upcoming new developments include Amari Colombo, Amari Vientiane and a new Thai resort property, Amari The Tide Bangsaen.

The company is also growing its OZO midscale brand, which currently has four hotels in Thailand, two in Hong Kong and one open in Penang, Malaysia. A new destination of Medini Iskandar, Malaysia is being prepared, where there will be a 198 room OZO hotel.
