Australia’s oldest luxury hotel, the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth, is getting an AUD$60 million facelift.

Renovation of a Sydney gem

The 15-storey hotel opened in 1966 and has become one of the most well-known fixtures on Sydney’s storied Wentworth Street, in the city’s CBD.

Sofitel Wentworth’s distinctive heritage facade and core will be retained, but the hotel’s offering will be brought squarely into the 21st century following the refurbishment.

The renovation will consist of 436 newly appointed guest rooms and suites spanning 15 storeys, and a new hospitality precinct aimed at international travellers.

Other new features include the Health and Wellness studio, designed with a fully equipped gym, and a club lounge for existing members and day pass holders to relax, entertain and work.

The grand entrance lobby has also been rethought, with vibrant striking features throughout. The pillarless Wentworth Ballroom has also been updated during the renovation.

Enhanced hospitality precinct

The hospitality precinct is set to include two new restaurants, two bars and one of Sydney’s largest rooftop terraces.

The project is due to launch late in 2024, after just ten months of work. The efforts were led by Australian architecture and interior design firm Fender Katsalidis.

Sofitel Wentworth is located just steps away from some of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks, including the Harbour Bridge and Opera House.

Sam Panetta, Sofitel Sydney Wentworth’s General Manager, said the group was excited to “reignite and add layers to the history of this landmark hotel.”

“The repositioning of the Sofitel will enhance the luxury services on offer and reinforce the value of the brand.”

The Sofitel brand is part of the hospitality group Accor
