The young, dynamic brand of Marriott International, Moxy, is to make its Turkey debut with the 2024 opening of Moxy Afrika Han.

This lifestyle hotel is being brought to life by Venue International with a design concept that reflects its historic location by Designist.

Taking over a historic site

Moxy Afrika Han is set to open in 2024 in the historical Afrika Han building of Beyoğlu in İstanbul. Venue International is leading the development of this property and, under the leadership of Aslı Arıkan Dayıoğlu, Designist is in charge of the hotel’s design.

Turkey’s first-ever Moxy hotel, this 168-key property will cater for the new generation of tourists looking for a fun, dynamic and stylish place to stay. Through its design, the hotel will connect guests with the character of its locale.

Characteristics of this lifestyle hotel are to include minimal room design balanced with extraordinary shared spaces for socialising. Guests will be able to make use of the social lobby as well as bar and retail areas.

A reflection of the area

For this project, Designist will fuse Moxy’s energetic hospitality concept with a sense of the location’s history and a desire to add value to the surroundings. The interior architect Dayıoğlu and her team will draw on 15 years of experience in designing hotels for major chains to transform this technically challenging historical building.

The historic Afrika Han building, built between 1905 and 1915, is located between two streets, with a calm design on the Küçükparmakkapı Street side and more ostentatious facade facing Büyükparmakkapı Street.

This building was designed as a seven-storey residence housing 57 studio apartments. Between 1992 and 2017, the building then became the site for the popular Hayal Kahvesi venue. As Designist brings it into a new era, the design firm aims to preserve the spirit of the storied site.
