For our latest TOPHOTELDESIGN exclusive, we go inside a 42-key hotel designed by Tristan Plessis Studio as a vibrant creative hub in the heart of the Italian capital.
This inspiring project combines heritage architecture with modern interiors paying homage to the area’s past.
A new chapter
On opening in May 2019, Chapter Roma revealed the results of a design concept that sensitively transformed a late 1800s building in Rome’s cobblestoned Regola district. Tristan Plessis Studio restored original features while reimagining the interior space, juxtaposing neoclassical details such as vaulted ceilings and tall interior arches with an industrial-chic aesthetic.
Taking inspiration from the area’s current status as a creative hub and its past as a centre for blacksmithery, the practice created a stylish hotel characterised by exposed bricks, steel, brass, copper, mid-century Italian furniture and herringbone floors. Graffiti and statement artworks complete the overall look of the public areas, contributing to the artistic richness of this neighbourhood, while guestrooms take on a tranquil feel, providing an oasis within the city.
Space to socialise and unwind
The design-led hotel’s 42 rooms and suites range from 20 to 35 sq m in size and come with views over the city or courtyard. These rooms are distinguished by emerald-green velvet upholstery, handmade rugs, wooden floorboards, brass fixtures by Buster + Punch and contemporary Bert Frank lighting.
Moreover, striking design elements from the likes of Tom Dixon, Moroso & Diesel and Seletti feature alongside custom furnishings by local artisans. And the bathroom of each room and suite pairs raw cement walls and granite flooring with the organic amenities of L:a Bruket.
The suites and lofts within this property also incorporate separate lounge areas, which are home to private bars and Marshall sound systems.
During their stay, guests can drink and dine in social areas including the gritty yet glamorous Chapter Lobby Bar, with plush velvet sofas and a communal table to encourage interaction; and the hotel’s deli-come-bistro Market, offering organic Italian produce and featuring a juice and salad bar.
