Hyatt Centric’s latest outpost hits all the right notes in the Golden State.

Heritage-inspired design

Hyatt Hotels Corporation and Presidio Companies have collaborated to create a new full-service lifestyle hotel at 1122 7th Street in Sacramento.

Owned by Presidio Companies and managed by the lifestyle operating division of Aimbridge Hospitality, Evolution Hospitality, Hyatt Centric Downtown Sacramento provides a launchpad for guests wanting to discover the landmarks, dining scene, shopping, nightlife and waterfront activities in California’s state capital.

The property lies adjacent to Golden 1 Center and Downtown Commons and is home to 172 guestrooms and suites, along with a range of amenities, including a state-of-the-art fitness centre and 2,000 sq ft of meeting space. There are also plenty of nods to the property’s history as an integral part of the local jazz community.

“This property is brimming with details that nods to the sparkling past, while celebrating the future of the destination through a playful interpretation of local culture, art and points of interest,” said Guneet Bajwa, managing principal of Presidio Companies. “We are honoured to present this hotel to a new generation of guests and look forward to seeing the hotel assume its rightful place at the centre of Sacramento’s bustling downtown scene.”

John Caparella, president of Evolution Hospitality, added: “We are so pleased to partner with Presidio Companies to bring travellers and locals alike back to this storied hotel site. As experts in operating unique properties, each with one-of-a-kind stories to tell, we are confident the experience we’re creating will translate into memorable stays for guests.”

A place in local history

The original hotel dates back to 1911 when it opened as the Hotel Clayton, before becoming Hotel Marshall in 1939 – named after James W Marshall, who discovered the gold that sparked the California Gold Rush. From the 1920s to the 1950s, it was a hub for the city’s jazz scene, with legendary musicians including Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Cab Calloway performing on the stage of the hotel lobby’s Clayton Club.

Now rising 11 storeys high, this hotel combines original façades with modern design celebrating the building’s past, from the Marshall amps stacked behind the front desk to hand-painted murals of musicians and music studio-inspired light fixtures.

A highlight of the property is The Clayton Club rooftop lounge, which is located on the sixth floor, paying homage to the Prohibition era and music scene of the original Clayton Club. The kitchen here is helmed by a native Sacramentan, Chef Ravin Patel, who champions farm-to-fork food in small plates celebrating the cuisines of the region.

Meanwhile, ground-floor American restaurant and bar The 7th Street Standard Restaurant, also led by Patel, serves brunch and dinner seven days a week in a bar and dining room taking design cues from the hotel’s golden age.
