The TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database reveals that North America and Europe will see a rush of openings as countries gradually reopen amid rising vaccination rates.

The 250 hotel schemes lined up to complete in August 2021 will introduce 50,863 new rooms around the world, our research indicates. These launches come at a time when many markets are finally reopening to travel, raising hopes that the hotel industry will make a speedy recovery after 18 months dominated by the Covid19 pandemic.

August 2021 hotel openings by region

North America leads our rankings of the most active regions, with 88 hotels and 22,886 rooms due to open in August 2021, although Europe comes in a close second with 73 projects and 10,884 keys set to launch. Comparing the respective room counts shows that, on average, the European properties will be a good deal smaller than their North American counterparts.

APAC follows some way behind, with 47 hotels and 8,929 rooms due to go live. Elsewhere, Africa will get 20 projects, the Middle East will welcome 13 schemes and Latin America can expect nine properties.

Of the 250 new hotels, the vast majority (158) will be in the four-star segment, while the remaining 92 are in the five-star category.

Top national growth markets in August 2021

The US comes out ahead on a country-by-country basis, with 74 planned openings and 19,109 new rooms. Eight of these projects will happen in New York, making it the world’s most dynamic urban market.

China follows in a very distant second place, courtesy of its tally of 17 launches and 3,280 keys. The UK is hot on its heels, however, with 16 projects and 1,732 rooms fast approaching the finish line; five of the country’s new hotels will open in London, making it the third most active urban market, just behind Dublin where six properties will debut.

Germany and Mexico complete the list of this month’s top countries, with 11 and seven new hotels on the cards respectively.

Which hotel brands are expanding most rapidly?

Hilton Worldwide’s brands take up two of the three spots on this particular leaderboard.

The ubiquitous Hilton Garden Inn flag gets the nod overall thanks to its eight new properties and 1,602 additional keys, putting it just ahead of Hampton by Hilton, which is planning seven openings and 879 extra rooms in August. Marriott International’s Element Hotels concludes our list – it’s preparing to launch six hotels and 787 keys.

In Dublin, Staycity Trinity Mark Street will offer travellers a new aparthotel option right next to the famous Trinity College. The seven-storey property will deliver 142 rooms with their own kitchen facilities. Guests will also be able to make use of a public lounge area, fitness room and laundry room.

Across the Irish Sea, The Westin London City will open its doors right on the banks of the River Thames. Boasting 222 rooms and apartments with splendid views of the city and the river, it’ll feature a lounge, a bar, a restaurant, conference rooms, a gym, a swimming pool and retail space. DMA is responsible for both the architecture and interior design of this high-profile project.

And not to be overlooked, Zulal Destination Spa & Family Resort is set to light up Qatar’s northern coast. This 120-key resort, which benefits from 1.2 km of beach frontage, will be divided up into three sections, each catering to a different target audience – families with younger children, teenagers and adults. The property’s vast spa will feature multiple treatment offerings, while its F&B programme will showcase a variety of local and international dining options.
