Aparium Hotel Group and entrepreneur Mark Mitchell have launched a 151-room property packed with more than 400 pieces of cutting-edge art curated by Saatchi Art.

The new hotel, located just 30 minutes north of Detroit in Birmingham, aims to attract cultured locals and modern travellers alike in this city that’s long been associated with high-end shopping and a dynamic art scene.

Michigan’s new luxury retreat

Daxton Hotel represents Aparium Hotel Group’s first collaboration with owner Mark Mitchell, a lifelong resident of the metro Detroit area who came up with the overall vision and named the property after his son. The 151-key scheme seeks to encapsulate a modern vision of Birmingham luxury, integrating premium art, wellness, dining and retail components.

“We are excited to show travellers the very best of Michigan and beyond in a market worthy of a world-class hotel,” said Mitchell. “Daxton will set a hospitality standard far beyond the Midwest and it is an absolute privilege to deliver a project that will be an important aspect of Birmingham’s fabric for generations to come.”

The hotel occupies a striking new building on Old Woodward Ave. As well as boasting more than 400 pieces of art curated by Saatchi Art, the property also showcases avant-garde lighting and bold furnishings in vibrantly coloured spaces, from the chartreuse lobby to the deep-burgundy guestrooms and lavender parlours.

A rich cultural offering

Each guestroom here features at least two custom artworks, with a total of 160 artists from nearly 40 countries represented. Noteworthy design elements include the work of acclaimed local muralist Ouizi (Louise Jones), who has transformed the headboards. The property also has an ongoing partnership with Cranbrook Academy of Art and Cranbrook Art Museum.

The hotel’s culinary offering is spearheaded by renowned chef Garrison Price, who oversees flagship restaurant Madam, which specialises in enlightened American fare highlighting seasonality and evoking a sense of playfulness. Distinguishing design details of the 80-seat restaurant include a soaring ceiling with a custom-made chandelier and oversized windows.

For wellness, Daxton Hotel has brought on a personal trainer in conjunction with Michigan’s Lean Body Studio and is set to offer private training sessions and interactive events such as Brunch and Burn. The property has its own Gazelle Sports running club too.

“Daxton will be a global icon,” said Aaron Black, the hotel’s general manager. “From the highly curated Saatchi artwork, renowned culinary leadership of Chef Garrison, innovative programming and creative collaborations, Daxton is the unparalleled offering Birmingham has been waiting for.”
