Designed to be in complete synergy with its surroundings, the luxurious InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort is the focus for our latest TOPHOTELDESIGN exclusive.
The architecture of Singapore-based design firm Eco-ID has created a refined setting that emanates stylish barefoot living against an inspiring natural backdrop.
An immersion into the surroundings
This 2019-opened InterContinental resort hosts guests on an island at the southernmost tip of the Raa Atoll, close to the Baa Atoll, which is a Unesco Biosphere Reserve. The scheme is home to 81 beach, lagoon and overwater villas and residences, along with impressive amenities – including six restaurants and bars – and extensive wellness facilities.
At the time of its launch, general manager Stefan O Huemer said that the development signalled a new era for the brand, further raising the bar when it comes to offering luxury and immersive experiences in the Raa Atoll.
Intuitive island-inspired design
The resort is distinguished by intuitive design that delivers a setting for families and couples to disconnect from the every day. Moreover, each space has been created to enhance the island’s natural environment.
Eco-ID conceptualised the resort’s architecture and interiors, with Avalon Collective Interior Design Studio designing the private villas’ interiors. Among the other notable companies involved in the project are high-profile kitchen supplier Andy Mannhart.
The villas here include first-of-their-kind two-storey Lagoon Villas, which pair overwater views with direct access to both the beach and lagoon, and amenities including private infinity and Jacuzzi pools. These are joined by overwater villas with expansive outdoor decks and beach villas with direct access to the island’s sandy shores, as well as four two- and three-bedroom residences.
Here, classic Maldivian thatched roofs come paired with light, bright contemporary space incorporating natural materials and making the most of the villas’ ocean views.
The resort’s signature AVI Spa incorporates six overwater treatment villas along with facilities including a yoga pavilion, while the restaurants range from adult’s-only enclave The Retreat featuring an infinity pool and private bar to Japanese-inspired dining experience Café Umi.
