According to TOPHOTELPROJECTS data, over 7,000 new hotel rooms are due to expand Kuala Lumpur’s hospitality offerings in the coming years.

In the next few years, Kuala Lumpur’s hotel market will grow by 26 properties and 7,442 rooms.

We find out which brands are investing heavily in the Malaysian capital and which noteworthy projects guests can look forward to.

Steady growth in the coming years

Kuala Lumpur’s hotel pipeline looks promising for the next few years and its 26 new openings are quite spread out.

In 2020 5 hotels will open, adding 1,626 rooms to the market. 2021 will be a busier year with 9 launches and 3,085 additional rooms. 2022 and 2023 will see 4 new hotels each and 4 more properties are on the books for 2024 and beyond.

The focus in KL is clearly on upscale offerings. 16 of the upcoming properties will offer guests 4-star service while the remaining 10 will provide a 5-star experience.

Top 3 hotel brands in Kuala Lumpur

Canopy by Hilton leads the pack with 2 new properties and a total of 912 rooms. Mercure Hotels are in second place. While they will also be launching two new hotels, their total room count will only add up to 470.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts will launch its first property in the city which will offer guests 690 luxurious rooms.

Noteworthy properties in Kuala Lumpur

The largest hotel to open in Malaysia’s capital in the coming years is the 690-room Fairmont Kuala Lumpur. The 62-storey hotel will launch by Q2 2022 and will offer guests a choice of 6 dining venues as well as close to 3,000 sqm of versatile meetings and event space. Recreational facilities will include and expansive pool, a health club and a spa. Fairmont’s new property will be in downtown KL and boast spectacular views of the Petronas Towers and grant guests quick access to the city’s top retail and lifestyle areas.

From Q1 2021, guests will find the 456-room Canopy by Hilton in the Bukit Bintang City Centre development (BBCC). Apart from hotel rooms, the property will offer a strata office, two blocks of serviced apartments, a retail centre and a Malaysia Grand Bazaar which will showcase a selection of Malaysia’s tradition-inspired products and a concert hall.

The 318-room Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur, Chinatown will open its doors by Q2 2020. Its central location, easy accessibility by car or public transport and their high-quality meeting spaces make the hotel ideal for business guests hosting meetings in downtown Kuala Lumpur.

Situated within the KL Eco City mixed-use landmark development, the 252-room Amari Kuala Lumpur is due to launch in Q1 2021 and will enjoy direct access to corporate office buildings, residential towers, a retail mall and an integrated rail hub with inter-city and inter-state rail connections. Following its completion, the 25-acre KL Eco City is anticipated to be Malaysia’s first integrated mixed-use green development.
