We take a look at what’s happening in the international hospitality industry this month.

We round-up figures from around the world as the year and the decade come to a close.

The numbers are drawn from the TOPHOTELPROJECTS database and tell us how the final month of 2019 is shaping up.

December openings

375 projects that have been making their way through the hotel development pipeline will finally open their doors to the public this month, adding 75,781 guest rooms to the international hospitality market.

No region is left unaccounted for this December, as every hotel market gives its final push as 2019, and indeed the 2010s as a whole, come to an end.

Busiest regions, countries and cities

Regionally, North America is the busiest area this December, with 102 projects bringing 19,023 new rooms to Canada, the US, Mexico and the Caribbean.

By contrast, but perhaps unsurprisingly, the most active country is China, with 83 projects to add 19,651 across the People’s Republic.

Coming down to the city scale, Dubai comes in on top with 6 projects bringing 1,605 rooms to the UAE city before the year is out.

Clash of the titans between Asia Pacific and North America

It is perhaps no coincidence that the two markets with the most movement are North America, with the US seeing lots of openings, and Asia Pacific, with China making the biggest waves in terms of openings.

Given the current trade war between China and the US, it seems this tug of war goes beyond trade and into the hospitality industry, with the US opening 69 projects this December, while China pips them to the post with 83 openings.

Biggest brands

The most popular brands opening this December reside in the mid-range section, including Hampton by Hilton, Ramada Worldwide and Hilton Hotels & Resorts.

Additionally, serviced apartments and extended stay properties are very popular with developers and investors, and Home2 Suites by Hilton, Citadines apart’hotels and Somerset Serviced Residences all have numerous properties opening this December.
