Africa will gain 97 hotels and 20,999 keys in 2022, according to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database – and these three schemes are the cream of the crop.

Significant developments in Morocco, Mozambique and Kenya are set to grow the footprint of some of the world’s best luxury hotel brands.

Anantara Al Houara Tangier Resort

Minor Hotel Group and Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company are collaborating on this newbuild resort in northern Morocco, which will operate under the Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas brand. The 150-key scheme forms part of Qatari Diar’s beachfront Al Houara project, which is also set to include an 18-hole golf course and homes for sale.

Scheduled to open in Q4 2022, Anantara Al Houara Tangier Resort will be home to several restaurants and bars, an Anantara Spa, a wellness centre, a fitness centre, and clubs for kids and teens. WATG and Wimberly Interiors are working on the architecture and interior design, with Agora Premium also involved in crafting the stylish interiors.

Banyan Tree Ilha Caldeira, Mozambique

An exciting addition to the Banyan Tree Group, this chic property, which is currently under construction, is set to begin welcoming guests from the second quarter of 2022. The company’s very first African property will host guests on the private island of Ilha Caldeira 10 km off the mainland; part of the Primeiras and Segundas Archipelago, Africa’s largest marine reserve, it provides exceptional access to marine life-rich reefs and idyllic beaches.

In total, Banyan Tree Ilha Caldeira will comprise 40 private pool villas overlooking the Indian Ocean, along with varied amenities including signature Thai restaurant Saffron and the Banyan Tree Spa.

JW Marriott Nairobi

Set to enhance Marriott International’s presence in Kenya, the Maryland-headquartered hotel group is looking forward to opening a JW Marriott property in Nairobi in the fourth quarter of 2022. Developed by AVIC INTL, this under-construction property features the architecture of GMP Architekten and Triad Architects, with interiors by George Wong Design.

A 365-key, five-star resort, JW Marriott Nairobi will be part of a mixed-use complex alongside a high-rise office building and an upscale apartment building with a retail area.

Many TOPHOTELNEWS articles draw on exclusive information from the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database. This subscription-based product includes details of thousands of hotel projects around the world, along with the key decision-makers behind them. Please note, our data may differ from records held by other organisations. Generally, the database focuses on four- and five-star schemes of significant scale; tracks projects in either the vision, pre-planning, planning, under-construction, pre-opening or newly opened phase; and covers newbuilds, extensions, refurbishments and conversions.
