Autograph Collection, St Regis and JW Marriott have all made our pick of Marriott International’s top five openings in 2021 – a year in which the hotel giant will roll out more than 400 projects.

Spanning the whole range from historic transformations to ambitious newbuilds, these special hotels will no doubt make a big splash over the next 12 months. According to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database, Marriott International is due to complete 431 schemes encompassing 92,122 hotel rooms in 2021 alone, but the following five are particularly worth keeping a close eye on.

The Pearle Hotel and Spa, Burlington, Ontario

Named after the company founder’s grandmother, The Pearle Hotel and Spa is part of a development overlooking Burlington waterfront that consists of two towers of Bridgewater Residences and the central Marriott hotel. This early-2021-opening hotel will join Marriott’s Autograph Collection and sits on 300 ft of Lake Ontario shoreline in the heart of downtown, placing it close to the city’s lakeside park and 450 ft pier.

The hotel was inspired in its design by local lake houses of the past, brought into the modern day by Studio Munge. Facilities here include 151 rooms; two event spaces; a spa with hammam steam room and indoor pool; a fitness centre; the ‘Isabelle’ restaurant and lounge; and the ‘Bread Bar’ grab-and-go offering. The development will also comprise 11,000 sq ft of ground-floor commercial space, home to restaurants, cafes and other amenities.

Autograph Collection Nanjing Garden Expo

Another addition to Marriott’s Autograph Collection, this luxury hotel, which is expected to open in the third quarter of 2021, will be part of Nanjing Garden Expo. It’s one of two hotels opening in the soon-to-debut Garden Expo in Nanjing’s Hexi area alongside Nanjing Westin Hotel Garden Expo, also by Marriott.

The Autograph Collection Nanjing Garden Expo hotel will comprise 200 guest rooms, along with an array of luxury facilities for both business and leisure travellers visiting the city.

Matild Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Budapest

This landmark hotel will be the first Hungarian property in the Luxury Collection portfolio. Matild Palace is a neo-Baroque building on the gateway to the Elisabeth Bridge. The new hotel, due to launch in early 2021 following its conversion, will house 130 guest rooms and suites, along with dining venues including a Sky Bar, signature restaurant and the historic Matild Cafe, which originally opened in 1901 and was the first cafe to open in the city after WWII.

The five-star property will also offer the full-service Swan Spa, a fitness centre and five meeting rooms with a total of 4,230 sq ft of event space. MKV Design is behind the newly designed interiors, which feature palatial high ceilings and command views over the Danube river. The palace is located at the centre of Budapest, making it an ideal base for exploring the Hungarian capital.

JW Marriott Ally Charlotte Center

Over in Charlotte, Marriott is set to open the first JW Marriott hotel in the Carolinas. This contemporary property, which is expected to be ready in the second quarter of 2021, is part of the US$82 million development of a light rail station. White Lodging and Crescent Communities are the project’s co-developers.

The luxury 22-storey JW Marriott Ally Charlotte Center will comprise 382 guest rooms, including 34 suites; an Italian steakhouse; an oyster bar; a spa; a rooftop pool and lounge overlooking downtown; and 15,000 sq ft of flexible event space. Each room will feature upscale amenities and floor-to-ceiling windows.

The St Regis Tamuda Bay, Morocco

Part of La Bahia Blanca, an exclusive lifestyle resort scheme on the Moroccan coast, The St Regis Tamuda Bay is now expected to make its debut in Q4 2021. It’s being developed by Eagle Hills and will showcase the design expertise of Smallwood throughout.

This long-awaited newbuild will feature 100 luxurious guest rooms and suites with unobstructed sea views, a specialty restaurant, an all-day-dining restaurant, a St Regis Bar, a spa, a pool and a fitness centre, alongside extensive event and meeting space. According to Marriott, the forthcoming resort will “exude Moroccan charm and pay tribute to the Andalusian cultural legacy through elevated design, exceptional service and unique food and beverage offerings”.
