2018 proves bumper year for tourism in Australia [Infographic]

Business in Australia is booming as many travellers are visiting the country on working holiday visas. Many tourists over the world consider Australia to be a “bucket list destination”.

The number of international visitors to Australia has grown steadily all throughout 2018, Tourism Australia said after conducting a series of travel industry briefings throughout the country.

Business is booming

There were 9.2 million visitor arrivals for year ending October 2018, an increase of 5.2% percent relative to the previous year.

Most notably, the group reported that nearly half of the AUD $42.5 billion ($30.5 billion) spent by international visitors came from younger demographics of travellers.

Many of these travellers were visiting the country on working holiday visas that enabled them to earn money and extend their stays past the usual length of time that young people dedicate to vacations.

This, in turn, also had the effect of allowing these guests to experience more of Australia than is typical for other categories of travellers.

An elusive bucket list?

In terms of challenges, Tourism Australia said that the land down under continues to struggle with being able to consistently turn the desirability of the country into actual visitors.

Reports suggest that many tourists over the world consider Australia to be a “bucket list destination.”

However, that doesn’t always mean they have the capital or the will needed to actually get themselves to the continent, which for many travellers is a long way away.

What, then, is needed to make this desirability turn to higher rates of reservations?

Boosting direct connectivity

Tourism Australia indicates that more airline access, with a special emphasis on non-stop flights to Australia, would greatly help would-be visitors actually reach its shores.

In part, a modest increase in direct flights likely drove the increase in world travellers to the country last year, it added.

Australia currently has non-stop flights from 17 cities in China, six in the United States, and even a flight that goes non-stop from Perth to London.

An increase in non-stop flights to some key cities in India, however, could result in a surge of visitors to Australia, the report said.

Tourism Australia is a promotional organization that works with high-end travellers, facilitating long-term stays and in-depth engagement with the country. The group also helps visitors travel widely within Australia, with unique insights about the state of tourism in the country.
