1,500 projects in booming European hotel pipeline: Rolf W. Schmidt [Download presentation]
TOPHOTELPROJECTS Founder and CEO Rolf W. Schmidt told TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR London delegates that the European hotel pipeline will hit a total of almost 260,000 rooms
Professionals operating within the European hospitality market have cause to be happy, despite underlying fears and uncertainty bubbling in parts of the continent.
This was a key takeaway based on figures presented by TOPHOTELPROJECTS Founder & CEO Rolf W. Schmidt at the recent TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR London, held in the Nobu Hotel Shoreditch on Feb 7.
Schmidt presented figures that reflected a healthy and booming hospitality market across the continent, boasting an incredible 1,500 projects in its pipeline, bringing a total of 258,000 rooms to the continent.
Domestic tourism is looking good, with Europe receiving the largest number of international visitors at 671 million.
Germany, UK and Ireland thriving despite Brexit
Brexit was the elephant in the room during TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR London.
There has been an air of uncertainty over Brexit in not just in Britain but also in the European hotel market.
However, apart from a slowdown in projects across the UK, it seems that Brexit hasn’t had as much of an impact as analysts might have predicted, Schmidt mentioned.
The hospitality sector in Ireland in particular, a country that stands to be hard hit by Brexit if and when it happens, is in good shape, with 50 projects on the way in the country.
Germany leads the way in Europe’s hotel development with 379 projects in the pipeline, with the UK following closely with 281 hotels in the works.
Brands and big names
Unsurprisingly, London has seen the biggest surge in hotel construction in recent months, with 83 projects in the works. And surprisingly, Dublin comes hot on its heels with 33 projects, an immense number for this tiny city.
Hotels at the lower end of the categories also seem to be the most popular with developers, and brands such as Holiday Inn Express, Hampton by Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn and Holiday Inn have the biggest presences in the pipeline.
The next stop for the TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR is Singapore’s Swissôtel The Stamford on March 14. For more information on attending, speaking or sponsoring, please get in touch with TOPHOTELPROJECTS Head of Global Events & Conferences Kayley van der Velde.
