Our researchers have analysed the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database and found that nearly 300 hotel schemes are set to open worldwide, with Europe leading the charge.

Some 295 hotels and 56,111 rooms will open in May 2021, according to our exclusive data. We take a closer look at these imminent launches and highlight a few of the most exciting new arrivals.

May hotel openings by region

By some margin, Europe will see the most hotels open overall, with 107 projects and 15,093 rooms due for completion in May. This feels all the more impressive when you consider the fact that many countries in the region are still struggling with fresh waves of Covid19 infections.

In North America, by way of comparison, 80 hotels with 18,477 keys are expected to launch. This significantly higher key count indicates that hotels in the region are much larger, on average, than those in Europe.

Elsewhere, APAC will see 60 properties with 13,654 keys go live, while 25 projects and 4,535 rooms are scheduled to open in the Middle East. Africa (16 openings) and Latin America (seven launches) complete our region-by-region breakdown.

The US powers ahead

In terms of which countries are most active in the hotel development stakes, the US takes the lead with 65 properties and 14,554 keys about to open. In line with that, New York City tops the list of urban growth markets in May, with eight openings and 2,524 rooms.

China comes in second place with 31 upcoming launches and 7,895 keys. The UK, meanwhile, will see 28 hotels and 3,404 rooms go live, followed by Germany (17 openings and 2,109 rooms) and Spain (nine properties and 1,877 keys).

Hampton by Hilton on the expansion trail

Hampton by Hilton tops our list of the world’s most active brands with eight openings and 1,156 additional rooms preparing to land this month. This puts it well ahead of W Hotels and Marriott Hotels & Resorts, which will each grow their respective footprints by five properties.

Of the 295 projects we’re tracking, roughly two-thirds (197) will be in the four-star category. The remaining third (98) will be in the five-star segment.

Watch out for these projects in May 2021

A simply breathtaking project, One&Only Portonovi will be part of a new 60-acre luxury lifestyle development on the picturesque shores of the Bay of Boka Kotorska in Montenegro. This property will boast 113 luxurious guestrooms, suites and villas, dining and retail options, and a wellness and vitality centre. Redefining luxury in the region, the scheme will also offer direct access to a relaxing waterside promenade.

Also in Europe, the 537-room Scandic CPH Strandpark will open in Copenhagen beside the Öresund Sound and within walking distance of Kastrup, making it easily accessible. The hotel, positioned just metres from the water, will offer guests stunning views from its top-floor gym, pool and bar.

Lastly, over in the US, the new Radisson Red Miami Airport will feature 155 guestrooms with bold design flourishes highlighted by efficient and modern yet functional furniture pieces, such as picnic tables instead of the traditional desks. The hotel will also feature the brand’s signature food and beverage outlet OUIbar + KTCHN, a pool and a fitness centre, plus multipurpose Event Studios.

Many TOPHOTELNEWS articles draw on exclusive information from the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database. This subscription-based product includes details of thousands of hotel projects around the world, along with the key decision-makers behind them. Please note, our data may differ from records held by other organisations. Generally, the database focuses on four- and five-star schemes of significant scale; tracks projects in either the vision, pre-planning, planning, under-construction, pre-opening or newly opened phase; and covers newbuilds, extensions, refurbishments and conversions.
